It is observed in the month of ‘Karkidakam’ (mid July –mid August) of the Malayalam calendar. It is also popularly known as “Ramayana Masam”.
The monsoon rains are at its peak in Karkidakam month. The epic Ramayana is read in this month in homes and temples.

Karikadam 1 is always very well celebrated in Kerala, by reading the Ramayanam…but being in Tamilnadu the significance and importance is less understood…the presentation is very clear and gives a wide understanding of the Ramayana maasa
